Running an organization is one of the hardest things. Leadership style is a critical factor in achieving great business.
A department director was talking about her chief executive officer to her colleague;
”Our boss is not motivating us. He is always on the table and he is talking with only some people who liked them. They established their internal clan and it is not possible to take clear and proper answers to the questions. They are talking and talking. We are losing market share and our main competitor increased customer value 10 percent in 6 months. He is not open and honest. I don’t understand why he is communicating and collaborating with only some people. He should behave equally. He should create a candor effect in our organization. Look at to the quality of products; consumer complaints increased 50 percent in last 6 months and we recalled one batch from the market. The productivity decreased at least 15 percent after his starting to the company. He only rewarded his people. He is not taking any action for the problems. It is clear that our board members don't see the real situation. Because he is manipulating the financial figures. He shows the situation good. I don’t trust him! He is different everyday. He blows with the wind. Two critical directors left the company. He does not believe us. He ignores us and all the problems are at our around. I want to help him, but he wants to do in his way but he does not know what his way is”.
This is a real story that is I learned on a visit to a company.
Leadership is a set of beliefs.
I believe that no one can lead effectively without developing and implementing a continuous and systematic improvements in a clear set of beliefs by searching, learning, understanding, applying and reconfiguring due to the changing business needs.
Now we will look at the types of clear set of beliefs.
There should be a belief on;
- How to motivate people;
- How to treat people;
- How to reward people;
- How to manage individual performance;
- How to relate members of the team;
- How to communicate with people openly and honestly).
- A belief in your team;
- A belief in the products and services that your company provides;
- A belief in your leader;
- A belief in your colleagues.
- A belief that you can overcome all types of problems that the business can face and at first sight they seem impossible to solve.
- A belief that you can succeed in achieving your strategy and vision.
- A belief in yourself;
- A belief that you can succeed in searching, learning, understanding, developing, testing and reconfiguring through continual evolutionary beliefs and changes in beliefs in the light of the long-term innovation strategy.
- A belief that her/his actions and words are consistent and they form the basis of her/his integrity and credibility.
Hovewer, beliefs can be dangerous and contribute to the failures in the long-term. Because, beliefs can become fixed in prejudice, in dogma, in bias and damage. Therefore, beliefs become the sources of self righteousness, oratory, obsession, disruptive, clans and clubs.
I see that many companies are failing to find the right leaders who have a clear set of beliefs due to their weakness in human resources, leadership development and talent management.
Clearly, great leaders are honest with themselves. They have got to know what they don’t know.
If you want to create a successful business and organization, you have to set a belief system in yourself and in your organization.
Bad behaviors are contagious and they contribute to the demise of the organization.
You have to be crystal clear!
How do you explore your current set of beliefs and evolve them into a set of firm convictions?
Do you believe that carrot and stick effectively motivates?
