Two women employees were talking. One asked, “did you go to the bank to withdraw the monthly salary”? The answer was, “yes, I did, but the bank doesn’t have salary deposits”. Our company is late, normally we should withdraw our salaries today” the other employee told. The owner and CEO of the company heard this discussion by a great chance. He immediately called chief human resources officer and told him; “what is your main purpose in your job”? There was no answer. The boss continued to speak; “ you have enough money in the bank. You have to pay the salaries on time. You have to keep in your mind that trust is the basis of my leadership. It is the glue that holds our organization together and increases commitment and productivity at the same time. This is your job”! This event was learned by all of the organization very quickly. This character of the boss quickly communicated many things to others.
This approach surprised me!
I have worked many years in pharmaceutical and food industries. I have learned that character of the leadership is a critical factor in organizational alignment and company’s success.
Do you have errors in your character?
People in an organization can understand false steps in the leadership’s character. This will contribute to eroding the relationship of trust.
Don’t make occasional lapses!
Such occasional lapses will create mistrust. Because people know when a leader/manager makes mistakes. Great leaders are very careful to correctly process decisions. Make good decisions and earn the people’s trust.
I see that some leaders/managers make commitments, but they don’t keep. Such leaders have the weak inner strength, low character and integrity.
Do you have a positive impact on others?
Some leaders are deceitful, lazy and impulsive. This is a poor character and limits the organizational success. This like a bomb ticking away. Such leadership will create low productivity and failures in the long-term. Companies should work with honest, disciplined and harworking leaders who have greater potential to achieve great dreams and a positive impact on others.
Do you believe that you can build trust by talking about it?
I have to say that trust cannot build by talking. Leaders with weak character are not trustworthy. Truly effective leaders can build trust and commitment by achieving results, always with higher integrity, recognition and giving suitable autonomy to their people.
Do you have respect?
If a leader doesn’t have high character, she/he cannot earn respect. According to my experience and knowledge, leaders can earn respect by making sound decisions, by admitting their mistakes, putting what’s best for their people and the organization ahead of their personal agendas in today’s highly competitive business world.
Do you focus on your character?
Some poor leaders shave the truth, tell white lies, fudge numbers, play politics and role play. Most high achiever leaders spend time developing their Professional skills. They seek to be highly competent. Fewer focus on their character. Normally effective leaders should focus on integrity, authenticity and discipline.
I love these phrases: Character makes trust possible. And trust makes leadership possible. That is the basis of the great leadership.
Do you think that trust is the basis of great leadership?
